What Is Smoke Firing?

Smoke firing is an ancient firing technique where organic materials are used to create surface decoration in lieu of glaze. In this process, organic materials like plants, sawdust and natural elements are pressed against the ceramic surface and wrapped in aluminum foil. The aluminum-wrapped pieces are then fired to approximately 1,000 degrees. At that temperature, the organic matter combusts, releasing smoke that gets absorbed into the porous clay body. The smoke is permanently fused into the piece, creating a gorgeous ethereal imprint that is one-of-a-kind.
